Wayne Berkeley was born in Trinidad
in 1940 and has been designing for the stage and Carnival from an
early age. In Trinidad he is best known for his designs in the
Carnival arena, having won “Band of the Year” thirteen times.
Some of the prize winning bands include “Secrets of the Sky,
Kaleidoscope, Titanic, Strike up the Band, Mirage, Rain Forest and
Amarant”. Berkeley has also designed the winning “Queen of the
Bands” costume for a record twelve times.
Berkeley has worked as a Set
Designer, Costume Designer, Mural Designer, Exhibition Designer
and Theatrical Director in places as far a field as Munich,
Montreal, Las Vegas, Paris, Miami and Caracas and won many awards
along the way.

Costume Designer for “The Great
Dance Gala” and the musical “Man better Man” at the Scala in
London.
Mural Designer for the Government
of Grenada.
Costumer Designer for the
Government of Trinidad and Tobago Pavilion at EXPO ’67 in
Montreal, Canada.
Designer for the Caribbean’s
Exhibit at the World’s Fair in Seville, Spain.
Stage Set Designer for Romeo and
Juliet, Twelfth Night, Pirates of Penzance, Guys and Dolls,
Carmen, Die Fledermaus and the Merry Widow in Trinidad.
Costume Designer for Equus, Xante,
The Carnival Extravaganza and the award winning musical Carnival
Messiah in London and locally for Cavalleria Rusticana and I
Pagliacci.
Designer of the alter for the visit
of Pope John 11 and the Garden Reception for the House of
Angostura on the occasion of the visit of her Majesty H.R.H. Queen
Elizabeth 11 to Trinidad.
Berkeley’s other love is Broadway
and he has produced and directed his own Broadway shows over the
last five years.
In 1974 he was awarded the Humming
Bird Gold Medal for his outstanding contribution to the
development of Carnival.
Wayne is regarded as one of the
Caribbean’s most versatile and prolific designers.
