Shalini is a young, vibrant artist
who uses primarily acrylic based paints and Indian inks as her
medium of expressing the intensity of colour and the richness of
life she absorbs from her surroundings.
Trinidadian born, Shalini is a
fulltime artist whose goal in life has always been self-expression
through the field of art… “Whatever form it presented, whether it
may be in my paintings, leather craft, graphic design or jewellery,
I have always associated myself with the idea of being an artist.”
Shalini lives in the heart of
Trinidad and in a more remote setting surrounded by the scenic
countryside. Although this provides a sanctuary, she encourages
herself into expanding her horizons in order to fulfill her desire
of becoming a recognized artist. Though primarily self-taught,
she was trained in the field of advertising as a graphic designer
at the John S. Donaldson Technical Institute. Whilst there she
also explored jewellery design where she excelled. She was
awarded a President’s medal in 1997 for jewellery.
During this period she was
approached by various publications and freelanced as an
illustrator for BWEE Beat Magazine and local newspapers. Later
Shalini entered the advertising field where she spent three years
in the industry, this however proved to be unfulfilling. It was
then she resided into her painting… “I believe God gave me the
desire and will to create.” Through this she was motivated.
Shalini enjoys painting eccentric
characters in geometric form. Her large expanse of colour and
decorative patterns such as spirals and swirls can be seen as an
underlying tone in all of her pieces. Being innovative and
experimental, she has recently indulged in doing collage work on
old chateau windows as another form of expression.
