Barry V. Pierre
was born in Trinidad and received his secondary education at
Mapps College in Barbados. He later studied Fine Art and
graphics at Sir John Cass College, London and the London College
of Printing. After that he went to Italy where he apprenticed
to the Italian painter Rodolfo de Sanctis.
Pierre traveled
extensively before returning to Trinidad in the early eighties.
Apart from living in Rome he also spent time in Spain and
India. He held his first exhibition at the National Museum and
Art Gallery, Port of Spain in 1982 and since then has shown at
Art Creators Gallery, Alliance Francaise, Roomor and Studio 44
London.
There are no
rules to his working process. Using a Graphic Impressionist
style bridging on semi-abstraction in certain instances renders
local scenes, still lives, portraits, etc in a brilliance of
colour, a melting pot of true Caribbeaniana.
In 1989 Pierre
showed his textiles and fashion design at the Trinidad and
Tobago High Commission in London, he also supplied Liberty’s of
London with specially commissioned and exclusive designs. He
has done hand painted furniture and has become well known for
his hand-painted and printed t-shirts.
However as a
natural progression he returned to the canvas some years ago
achieving greater freedom of expression and appreciation of
Fauvism using colour rich and tropical with darker areas
contrasting with gold, copper, silver etc.
