Mary was born in Point-a-Pierre,
and, having always been interested in art, participated in various
small art groups, studying pottery, drawing and painting. She
migrated to Australia for 25 years, where, according to Lange,
when her ‘burning desire to paint’ could no longer be ignored, she
began to study art in 1976. She earned an advanced certificate in
Art and Design at the Fremantle College of Technical and Further
education in Western Australia, developing her interest in mixed
media. She participated in several group exhibitions in Australia,
before returning to Trinidad in 1997.
In 1999 she held a joint
exhibition with Danielle Du Boulay at Mirror Mirror, and CLICO
purchased a piece of her artwork to include in their 2003
calendar, featuring some of Trinidad’s local artists.
Most of her work represents
Caribbean scenes and people, and is created using mixed media.
Artist's Statement
A fascination with the use of color has always been evident
in my work. I have continued to work with mixed media and my
subject matter generally consists of colorful local scenes to be
found around us; anything from Caribbean dancers to market vendors
and flowers. However, just recently I have been experimenting with
abstracted local scenes, but always in the mixed media that allows
such freedom of creativity. |
