Born in Venezuela twenty- three years ago, raised in Trinidad, if
I could only count the number of influences around me that kindled
my interest in art- from my Grandparents to my Uncles, it would be
easier to ask who in my family isn’t involved in art. And so I
grew up in an environment where art was a comfortable haven in
which I could express myself- it was from this base that I
embarked on a long journey of education that constantly revolved
around my talent.
From Holy Name
Convent to Maple Leaf International School; followed by a few
months in an Arts Institute in England, two years in Florida’s
Eckerd College, and finally culminating in Loyola University of
New Orleans. This is where I earned a Bachelor’s Degree in
Psychology and Visual Arts. It was in this Mecca of all things
strange and beautiful that my appreciation of art expanded, trying
my hand at ceramics, photography and sculpture.
It is, however,
this beautiful land of Trinidad and Tobago that inspires me to
paint the pieces you see in this collection… no masks, no
disguise, just beauty in its raw, pure form- Nature. What better
model can depict my intense love of colour than the source of it?
Nature’s palette is my inspiration- it is the reason I paint.
Each artist
subscribes to their own set of rules regarding how to best share
this emotion that prompts us to make art. My approach is to
immerse myself in Nature’s Gift, to appreciate the sun’s reflected
shadow, dancing on a fig leaf, and finally to somehow show you how
I see this paradise I am proud to call home.
I hope you hear
my voice.
