Alicia De Lima was born in Trinidad and is a Resident of both Trinidad and Venezuela.
Throughout her childhood she was always interested in the plastic arts, and later in visual arts and classical music, which was encouraged by her parents. Art was one of her main subjects in G.C.E. followed by courses in Ceramics and Introduction to the Arts at the Extra Mural Dept. of UWI.

In Venezuela she attended classes of "Appreciation and History of World Art". She started her drawing in carbon and pastels, then went on to oils and acrylics with the well known artist Luis Alvarez de Lugo.

Recently has dedicated her artistic tendencies to Watercolours with the Chilean artist Renate Sunko.

Her drawings were mainly of nudes and still life and her painting has evolved from scenery to Surrealism Expressions.

She has always had a strong focus on the flow of colour in nature, clothing - such as batik, paper making, serigraphy, jewelry, household furnishings and hand crafts. She has filled many a spare moment throughout her life, etching, sketching and painting.

Her art has been sold in small galleries in Venezuela and was for the first time presented in Trinidad at Art Creators Gallery under "Women Who Paint 2006".

The theme for this exhibition is “Expressions in Blue” and include pieces such as a racehorse, “The Royal Blue” a musical piece, “The Blues” and nudes, “I’m Feeling Blue”, “Blue Jeans” and “Madam Bleu” as well as abstracts “Age of Aquarius” and “Blue Lace”.  Her collection demonstrates her versatility with watercolour as a medium, and although there is the common element of blue throughout her exhibition, the variety of techniques used makes the collection interesting, beautiful and visually stimulating.

Expressions in Blue

Colour has always fascinated man and the theme ‘Expressions in blue’ is a painted essay of the prime colour: blue.

Blue symbolizes wisdom, knowledge, intelligence, sensitivity, responsibility, peace also heavenly figures.

Within the Universe, Planet Earth is blue. The colour blue is in forms of electromagnetic waves, minute cells, photosynthesis, etc.  Blue is in every hidden corner, from the skies to the deep seas.  The magical touch of blue is everywhere, for example:  Green cannot exist without blue.

The new millennium is also called the blue millennium. Blue also represents this era, called the Age of Aquarius.  This Blue era has a deep significance for man.  Supposedly we are entering into a higher dimension, one of wisdom and peace, where we begin to live more in awareness, hopefully to be more alert of all our reactions due to our emotions.  Blue is being aware, aware of our conflicts, our lack of sensibility, sensitivity and care within our beautiful blue planet.

Personally with ‘Expressions in Blue’ I have projected and painted with water and a wide range of blues. Water symbolizes emotions, so using water and blues, I have been able to express our blue planet, our beautiful island, also musical pieces of the past, well known sayings, calculated  designs also memories and moments of joy.

The square format stands for equality, balance and maturity.  Using this format and  blues with the various watercolour techniques and perhaps a touch of acrylic or  a sprinkle of pure blue pigment as used in the Byzantine era,  relates the story of ‘Blue’ and its wide range of expressions:  ‘Expressions in Blue’.
