Ann Stapleton was born in Trinidad.  She grew up in the village at the top of Mt. D’or Road Champ Fleurs, the source of most of her inspiration.  She developed her love for art at an early age.

At St. Joseph’s Convent, St. Joseph she was able to develop her talent.  Upon graduation she attended Albert Pels School of Art, New York, USA where she studied, Interior Design and Graphic Arts for a period of three years.  At this time she was able to attend classes by Albert Pels in Fine Art and Richard Beltram in Illustration.

After receiving a Certificate of Distinction upon graduation, Ann commenced a career in the Advertising Industry.  For the next 14 years she worked as a Graphic Artist to major agencies in New York City and subsequently Trinidad, dividing her time between New York and Trinidad.

A versatile artist, Ann is equally at home in a variety of media but her technique of choice is acrylic in the Impasto Style.

Her paintings are imaginative expressions on Caribbean Life and Spiritual Themes.  Corporate firms and private collectors both at home and abroad have collected her work.  Including The Ministry of Culture, The Central Bank of Barbados and Colonial Life Insurance Company.

Two of her paintings were featured in the internationally known “CLICO” Calendar for the year 2003.

A member of the Women in Art Organization, Ann exhibited for the first time at The Annual Women in Art Exhibition, July 2000 and The National Museum’s 38th Anniversary Independence Show and subsequently done work on commission as well as participated in many joint exhibitions.

The artist resides in Chaguanas, is married with two children.

Artist Statement

My medium is Acrylic and I chose the Impasto Style for most of my paintings since it gives me the opportunity to really liberate my inner emotions.  By using vibrant textures and brisk lines I dare you to reach out.  I desire my paintings to radiate the warmth of the human spirit more so than soothe tired nerves.  The majority of the paintings depict dancers.  Dancing was my second dream pursuit as a child.  As an artist I enjoy depicting the movement and the emotion involved.

My goal is to stir the senses. If I have achieved this then I believe that I’ve created a successful painting.
