ANASHIA ALI

"From all that I have seen I am
more than ever convinced that art must communicate, it must
represent, it must describe and express people, their lives and
times”. Raphael Soyer (Russan/ American Artist)
From a very early
age, Anashia expressed a keen interest in art. She placed first
in the Cambridge Advanced Level Art and Design examinations in
1991 whilst a student of St. Joseph’s
Convent, P. O. S. For this, she received the Award of Merit
with Honours. In 1998, she obtained a Certificate in Visual Arts
with Distinction, from the University of the West Indies, St.
Augustine and in 2002 she graduated from there with First Class
Honours in B.A. Visual Arts. In 2004, she won the award for Most
Outstanding Artist (Abstract) at the Women in Art Eighth Annual
Art Exhibition. In 2005, Anashia won the competition to design
three glass panels for Christ the King Church, San Fernando. She
was then commissioned to produce the panels as murals. Anashia
also holds a BSc. in Sociology with Psychology and a
Postgraduate Diploma in Education.
Anashia Ali has
been participating in group exhibitions since 1998 and became a
member of the Women In Art Organization in 2002. She held her
first solo exhibition at Horizons’
Art Gallery in October 2007. Whilst Anashia does not identify
herself with any particular style, her work has often been
described as realistic impressionism, sometimes semi-abstract.
Her themes focus on the unique culture of her country and our
shared human experiences as a people.
